Short Bios

 

1. Odille Moreau: Associate Professor in History at the University of Montpellier in France and Researcher at the French National Research Center (CNRS).

She is the author of “L’Empire ottoman à l’âge des réformes, 1826-1914” Istanbul, Bilgi University Press (2010); she edited “Réforme de l’Etat et réformismes au Maghreb (XIXième –XXième siècles)” (2010), and she co-edited other collective editions. She published more than 50 articles in English, French and Turkish.

Moreau graduated from the Sorbonne University in Paris where she obtained her Ph. D. She conducted research at the French Research Institute for Anatolian Studies (IFEA) in Istanbul for 2 years and prepared her Ph. D. She also directed an international research program at the French Research Institute (IRMC) (IFRE-CNRS/USR 3077) in Tunis for 4 years and and continued her research at the Zentrum Moderner Orient in Berlin for 2 years.

 

 

2. Tilman Lüdke: Senior researcher at the University of Freiburg.

Dr. Lüdke studied Middle Eastern Studies and Modern History at the Universityof Albert-Ludwigsin Freiburg Germany. He had his MA and PhD degrees from Oxford St. Anthony College. During his graduate studies, he conducted his research on Ottoman studies in Istanbul funded by Skilliter-Centre for Ottoman Studies, University of Cambridge. He was also teaching assistant for "History of the Turkish Revolution", at Koç University, Istanbul. After his doctorate, he gave lectures at Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), at the Universityof Erfurtand at Albert-Ludwigs-University in Germany.

Dr. Lüdke’s research interest includes Modern History of the Near and Middle East, Ideologies in the Middle East, Political Islam, Citizenship and Democracy in the Middle East. He is the author of many chapters and articles.

 

 

3. Burak Samih Gülboy: Associate professor at Istanbul University Faculty of Economics, Department of Political Science and International Relations.

Graduated from Bilkent University Department of Political Science and Public Administration, he completed his master’s degree in the field of Diplomatic History and his PhD in the field of International Relations in 2002 in Istanbul University. He gained his tenure/Associate Professorship in 2009 in the field of Diplomatic History.

He has books and articles on 19th century European History and the First World War and still works inIstanbulUniversity.

 

 

4. Feroze Abdullah Khan Yasamee: Professor at Manchester University.

Prof. Yasamee is working on the modern history of theMiddle East. He has researched and published widely in the fields of the  political, diplomatic and military history of the lateOttoman Empire, with a particular interest in the period 1870-1918.

 

 

5. Behlül Özkan: Assistant professor at Marmara University, Department of Political Science and International Relations.

Dr. Behlül Özkan completed his bachelor studies at the Bosphorus University Department of Political Sciences and International relations. He then performed his graduate studies and received his PhD from Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy,Tufts University.

Dr. Özkan is the author of “From the Abode of Islam to the Turkish Vatan: Making of a National Homeland in Turkey” (Yale University Press, 2012). He also worked as a journalist at CNNTurk and Aljazeera.

 

 

6. Jay M. Winter: The Charles J. Stille Professor of History,YaleUniversity.  

Prof. Winter got his BA degree fromColumbiaUniversityand PhD degree from CambridgeUniversity. He taught at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the University of Warwick and the University of Cambridge before joining the faculty of Columbia University in 2000 and then the Yale faculty one year later.

As a professor of history, Winter is specialist of World War I and its impact on 20th century. His other interests include remembrance of war in the 20th century, such as memorial and mourning sites, European population decline, the causes and institutions of war, British popular culture in the era of the Great War and the Armenian genocide of 1915.

 Winter is the author or co-author of a dozen books and many articles. Jay Winter was also co-producer, co-writer and chief historian for the PBS series “The Great War and the Shaping of the 20th Century,” which won an Emmy Award, a Peabody Award and a Producers Guild of America Award for best television documentary in 1997.

 

 

7. Gül Tokay: Independent researcher, scholar

After completing her studies at the University of London, Gül Tokay joined the Department of Politics and International Relations at Marmara University, Istanbul Turkey in 1995. Since 2002, she works as an academic researcher based London and Istanbul.

Dr. Tokay’s research interests and publications include Late Ottoman Diplomatic Relations and History of South-easternEurope, 1878-1914.

 

 

8. Namık Sinan Turan: Associate Professor of Political History atIstanbulUniversity.

As an associate professor in the field of political history, Turan has given lectures at several universities.

He is the author of “Hilafetin Tarihsel Gelişimi ve Kaldırılması and İmparatorluk ve Diplomasi: Osmanlı Hilafetinin izinde” as well as other articles, and scholarly contributions. His research interests are mainly in the field of Ottoman Political History.

 

 

9. Feroz Ahmad: Professor of history atYeditepeUniversity.

Prof. Ahmad completed his BA degree atDelhiUniversityand his PhD at theUniversityofLondon. After lecturing at the University of Massachussetts at Boston for a long period, he continued his academic studies inTurkey.

He is the author of The Young Turks (1969) and The Turkish Experiment in Democracy 1950 – 75 (1977) and many other works on modernTurkey and Middle East history.

 

 

10. İskander Gilyazov: Professor at theUniversity ofKazan.

Prof. Gilyazov contucted his BA and graduate studies at the University of Kazan. He analyzed the “military and political collaboration of the Turkic-Muslim peoples of the Soviet Union with Germany during World War 2”, in his PhD dissertation.  He has been the head of the Department of the Tatar History and Turkology of International Relations at the University of Kazan since 2010.

Prof. Gilyazov’s research interest mainly focuses onRussia, Tatar history and Tatar diasporas in European and Asian countries.
